Pacific Island scholarships
The Pacific Islander Community Council in an effort
to assist Pacific Island students to access higher education and
increase the number of college and university graduates nation-wide,
has complied the following scholarship resource material. We than
all who so willingly provided the Council with this information
and are pleased to pass the material on to all interested parties.
We hope that by informing Pacific Islander students of these wonderful
opportunities, we will meet our goal in seeing an increase at
the matriculation and graduation levels of higher education in
a variety of disciplines and at as many level as possible. Although
the list is not inclusive of all available funding resources,
it does provide a basis for a good start in the right direction.
1. `AHAHUI O LILI`UOKALANI HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB

AOLHCC provides support and encouragement for Native
Hawaiian youth entering colleges and universities anywhere in
the United States. Scholarship awards do not exceed $1000 and
are given first to youth of Native Hawaiian descent and whose
parent are members of the `Ahahui. Applications are available
March 1 of each year and are due May 31 of each year. For more

AOKHCC encourages and assists any full time student
in an academic, vocational, trade undergraduate or graduate program
of their choice. All applicants must be full-time students, as
defined by their selected college / university, trade / technical
school. Applications are available in January of each year and
are due May 15 of each year. For more information about the application

3. ASSOCIATION OF PACIFIC ISLAND EDUCATORS (APIE)

The purpose of the APIE scholarship is to provide
support and encouragement for Pacific Island students to pursue
higher education opportunities available to them through this
funding process. Scholarship awards are limited to applicants
who can claim ancestry among any of the original peoples of the
Pacific Islands. Applicants must have applied for admission to
a college or university or they must be continuing their studies
in a college or university. Funding levels range from $250 to
$1200. Applications are available in January each year and are
due May 22 of each year. Applicants for an APIE scholarship being
considered are determined on the basis of demonstrated academic
success, need for financial assistance and service to the Pacific
Island community in Southern California.
4. CHILDRENíS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The scholarship program provides private school scholarships
to families based solely on need. Scholarships are awarded to
students in grades K-8. No minimum grades are required. No tests
to take. Families who live within Los Angeles CITY boundaries
and some bordering communities may apply. They must meet the financial
need guidelines which vary according to household income and family
size. Scholarships will be determined on a sliding scale and will
range from 25% to 75% of the tuition. Recipients must be entering
grades K-8 in the fall of the year. Awards are for
a maximun of $1400 for traditional schooling for grades K-8. The
cap will increase to $2300 when students reach high school. To

5. HAWAI`I DAUGHTERS GUILD OF CALIFORNIA (HDG)

The HDG offers scholarship to female student who are
of Pacific Island ancestry. Preference is given to young women
of Native Hawaiian ancestry. Funding levels rage from $500 for
enrollment in a Junior College to $1000 for enrollment in a four-year
college. An applicant may apply each year that she is in school
for continued support. Applications are available September 1
of each year and are due December 31 of each year.
6. HAWAIIAN HOMES COMMISSION SCHOLARSHIPS

Funded by the Hawaiian Homes Commission, this scholarship
is offered to qualified native Hawaiians (50% or more Hawaiian).
Recipients are qualified to attend colleges in or out of the state
of Hawaiíi. Scholarship awards are based on financial need
and merit. The purpose of the Hawaiian Homes Commission scholarships
is to promote and support the educational advancement of Native
Hawaiians to achieve economic self - sufficiency. To be eligible,
applicant must: a)Be 50% or more Hawaiian, verified by DHHL. 2)Demonstrate
financial need. c)Demonstrate academic achievement or excellence.
d)Be a classified undergraduate or graduate student. e)Be enrolled
as a full-time student in an eligible post-high institution. Contact
DHHL for application, funding, deadlines and other details on
this scholarship program. Apply early to clear your Native Hawaiian
eligibility by DHHL. Kamehameha Schools Financial Aid Department
determines all other eligibility requirements.

8. LEADERSHIP EDUCATION FOR ASIAN PACIFICS (LEAP)

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern California,
Leadership for Asian Pacifics and KSCI-TV Channel 18 have teamed
up to hone twenty Southland Asian Pacific youth leaders. The search
is on for students (ages 15-18) of Asian Pacific heritage residing
in the five Southern California area ( Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside,
San Bernardino, Venture counties ) who have participated in a
variety of extra- curricular community activities, demonstrated
outstanding leadership skills and academic achievement.
Each winner will be awarded a $1000 scholarship applicable
to the four-year accredited college or university of the studentís
choice. Scholarships are funded by the Ronald McDonald House Charities
of Southern California ( RMHCSC ) and disbursed through Leadership
Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP). Winners will be recognized
at an awards luncheon and names aired on KSCI-TV. Entry forms
are available by writing KSCI-TV. All entries must be received
by (not postmarked) KSCI-TV no later than April 12. LEAP will
disburse all scholarship monies to the winners upon request by
each studentís institution of higher education. All principle
scholarship monies must be utilized by tuition or other college
education-related costs by designated students with five years
or the money will revert back to RMHCSC for the selection of an
alternate.
9. NATIVE HAWAIIAN HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:

Funded by the U. S. Department of Health and Human
Services through the U.S. Public Health Service, this award assist
Hawaiian students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment
in selected accredited health professions training programs. To
be eligible, applicants must: a) Be Hawaiian (descendant of the
aboriginal inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands prior to 1778.
b)Be a United States citizen. c)Be enrolled full-time in selected
accredited health professions training program. Upon completion
of training, scholarship recipients must commit to full-time service
equivalent to the number of years for which they received scholarship
assistance (minimum of 2 years, maximum of 4). Program participants
fulfill their service obligations at sites in the state of Hawaii
serving Native Hawaiians, including any one of the five Native
Hawaiian Health Care Systems or federally designated primary health

10. NATIVE HAWAIIAN HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRAM:

This scholarship is funded by a grant from the U.S.
Department of Education. Applicants must be Hawaiian, U.S. Citizens
and enrolled full-time in an undergraduate (with 3.0 GPA) or graduate
(with a 3.5 GPA) program. They must demonstrate financial needs
and academic potential and submit an essay on their community
service proposal. Recipients must provide 150 hours of service
to the Native Hawaiian community per award in return for the scholarship
assistance. Scholarship awards are contingent on availability

11.THE NATIVE HAWAIIAN LEADER PROJECT

The Native Hawaiian Leadership Project is a program
funded by the U. S. Department of Education, Native Hawaiian Higher
Education Act. The Project has been granted approximately $1.8
million to be allocated over 1998-2001. These funds will be used
to implement various projects that will encourage Native Hawaiians
to attain undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees. Approximately
30 scholarships will be awarded to full-time undergraduate, graduate,
part-time undergraduate and graduate degree seeking students.
These awards will be based heavily on academic promise
and partially on financial need. Applications are available and
all supporting documents must be postmarked no later than February
22. Notification of these awards will be made by May 1st and acceptance
of the award by the student must be made by May 15. Enrollment
to commence in the fall. Eligible applicants for an NHLP scholarship
must:
- Be Hawaiian
- Be a United States citizen
- Have a high school diploma (or equivalent)
- Be a classified student in a degree-seeking program
- Be enrolled full-time or part-time in a regionally accredited
two or four-year degree granting institution of higher education
(anywhere in the United States)
- Demonstrate financial need
- Demonstrate satisfactory academic requirements

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs Education Foundation
Scholarship is a partnership effort with the Kamehameha Schools.
The purpose of the scholarship is to provide educational funds
to assist qualified persons of Hawaiian descent through programs
offering undergraduate and post graduate degrees. This award is
a one-time grant for the current degree being sought. Program
requirements are:

- Be enrolled full-time or part-time in a regionally accredited
two or four-year degree granting institution of higher education

The Polynesian Society offers scholarships to Pacific
Island students who are graduating seniors in the year of application
up to $500 and book scholarships up to $250 to student already
